On 17 November at 7pm HKT we are organising a webinar focusing on the current economic situation. More specifically we have pulled together a panel of senior bankers who will talk about the following subjects:
- Economic trends expected to develop out of the current stage of Covid-crisis, particularly across the Asia Pacific region
- Impact on currencies and other macro-economic factors
- The consequences of the US election on the Asian economies
- Economic nationalism: a potential threat for global recovery in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic

Rob Carnell
Head of Research and Chief Economist Asia Pacific at ING Bank N.V.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-carnell-6553961b/Rob joined ING in October 2004 and until May 2017, was working in London as ING’s Chief International Economist. Prior to ING, Rob worked as Senior International Economist for Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and as Pan Asia Economist for Schroder Investment Management. He started his career some 24 years ago as an Economist with the UK Government, working in the International Finance Directorates and Inflation and Monetary Policy units of HM Treasury.
He holds First Class Honours and Masters’ Degrees in Economics.
Rob is a regular on business news channels such as Bloomberg and CNBC, and says the best bit of his job is speaking to clients: “You’re never as good at your job as you are the week after a client roadshow”.
Rob enjoys testing the boundaries of the dismal science. He is an ardent critic of recent central bank policies, and has also published on non-mainstream issues such as the economic consequences of rising obesity, green energy and climate change.

Van Der Linde
Head of Equity Strategy, Asia Pacific at HSBC
Herald is Head of Equity Strategy, Asia Pacific. He joined HSBC in 2005 and has previously served as Deputy Head of Research, Asia Pacific. Herald came to HSBC with 20 years of experience in various roles, including analyst, equity strategist, and country head of research, in Indonesia, South Africa and Taiwan. He holds the CFA designation, speaks seven languages and has an MSc in macroeconomics. Herald is also an Associate of the Institute of Wine and Spirits and is a certified lecturer for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and the author of a book on wine as well as author of “Jakarta: History of a misunderstood city”
Jan Van Hove
Chief Economist at KBC Bank
Mr. Van Hove is Chief Economist with KBC Bank since September 2016 and a Professor of International Economics at the University of Leuven since October 2005. He obtained his doctorate in 2008 at the University of Leuven, topic of his dissertation was 'The Impact of Tech Innovation & Spillovers on the Pattern & Direction of International Trade'. Thanks to this & his acquired experience with the Bank, he is a specialist in International Economics, Trade, Applied Macroeconomics, European Business & Economics and Panel Data Econometrics.
